What to Know About Myopia Control
The American Optometric Association states that over 40 percent of Americans have myopia. It's even an eye problem that affects school-aged children. To correct this problem, our optometrists at Legacy Optical in Hampton Bays can provide you with quality eyewear. Let’s learn a bit more about myopia and how we can help.
What Is Myopia?
Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is a vision problem that occurs when you cannot see far away clearly. With myopia, you can see up close details properly unless you also have farsightedness. When you have this condition, light reflects in front of your retina instead of on your retina, which is why your eyesight up close isn't affected.
Signs You Have Myopia
You might have myopia if you have blurry or fuzzy vision at a distance. You may find it hard to read words that are far away, such as on road signs.
For appropriate myopia control, our eye doctor will test your vision first. We use a phoropter that you look into. Our optometrist will switch the magnifying powers to see which one optimizes your vision best. Our eye doctor will determine your prescription based on your results.
How Myopia Is Treated
You will either need contacts or glasses to correct your vision. Our eye doctor can help you determine which option is right for you since some people are unable to wear contacts because of their eye health.
We will also make sure you have the right contact type. For instance, if you have astigmatism along with myopia, you may need specialized contacts for astigmatism. Certain contacts are also better suited for patients who have dry eye. In some cases, you may want to undergo Ortho-K and receive contacts that you sleep in and don't wear during the day.
If you would prefer not to wear contacts or glasses for myopia control, you also have the option of laser eye surgery. This permanently corrects your vision by reshaping a portion of your eye, so the light reflects properly on your retina. Although our eye doctors do not perform this surgery, you can receive information about the procedure and determine if it is right for you.
