Myopia Control

When a child has myopia, also called nearsightedness, it often gets worse rapidly. However, an optometrist on our team can prescribe the right eye care for your child to help them with myopia control. The eye doctor can prescribe an optical treatment that can help your child with the condition so that it doesn't keep progressing rapidly. We can also help with your child's eyewear, supplying eyeglasses so that they can choose the glasses frames they like. With our children eye care, your child can get help for a condition that can continue progressing until they are adults. If you're in the Suffolk County, NY, or Hampton Bays, NY, areas, call us at Legacy Optical to have your child see an eye doctor on our team.

Myopia Control

Prescription Eye Drops

There is a prescription eye drop called atropine that can help with myopia control in children. This eye drop is administered to the child every night when it's time for bed. Administering eye drops to a child may start out with some resistance, but after a little while it can become simply part of their routine. The eye drops can help the progression of myopia to slow down or even stop. When this is done, the child won't develop the severe myopia that they might have without these eye care treatments. They eye drops can be used along with the child's eyeglasses to help correct vision.

Ortho-K Contact Lenses

Ortho-k contact lenses are a very different type of myopia control treatment. This children eye care method is used to accomplish a couple of goals. These contacts are a specialty type that are only worn at night while the child is sleeping, unlike regular contact lenses. When the child has these contacts in, they will put pressure on the eyeballs so that they will change their shape. This pressure is gentle and not a painful process. The contacts work so well at this each night that the child won't need to wear their regular eyewear during the day to correct their vision. In addition, this optical method will help stop or slow down the progression of the child's myopia.
