Eyeglasses FAQs

Wearing eyeglasses is a major life adjustment for first-time users. It is important to gather as much information as possible before selecting your first pair of eyewear. At Legacy Optical in Hampton Bays, we have provided Suffolk County residents with reliable eye care services for many years. Following are the answers to several questions our optometrist frequently receives regarding eyeglasses.

.

What Factors Should be Considered When Choosing Frames?

After a comprehensive eye exam, one of our optical professionals will reccomend eyeglass frames in different styles, colors, and designs. Still, with so many options available, patients have a hard time selecting one. You want to choose frames that are an extension of your personality. Look for a design that balances and complements your facial features. Designer frames may cost more, but they provide quality over an extended period.

How Can You Prolong The Life of Your Eyeglasses?

A popular feature that prolongs the life of your glasses is spring hinges on the stems. It allows the frame to flex outward over the temple of a large head. Eyeglass frames without spring hinges will stretch out and slide off your nose. Often, they will sit uncomfortably on the bridge of your nose and have to be adjusted periodically from time to time. Fortunately, an optometrist can solve this problem by switching the frame's stems that evenly balance the glasses on the nose's bridge and behind the ears. Also, if you are buying a single pair of glasses, avoid purchasing trendy frames that will be out of style in a few months. And make sure to order scratch-resistant coated lenses. But avoid storing them in a high-temperature location inside the home. The heat will remove the protective coating of the lenses.

How Often Should I Clean My Eyeglasses?

It is wise to clean your eyeglasses daily. Standard liquid soap or specialized eyeglass cleaners are effective at removing dirt and grime off the lenses. However, refrain from using antibacterial products such as hand sanitizers or household window cleaning sprays on your eyeglasses. The products contain alcohol and other harmful chemicals that could damage the protective surface of your lenses.
