Glaucoma Surgery

What to do after Glaucoma Surgery

You have glaucoma, and you want to get glaucoma treatment. Medicine has advanced, and surgery has become even more routine. What happens is that the surgery reduces the pressure in your eye so that it won't do any damage to the optic nerve. As a result, you can delay or prevent any problems with your eyesight.

The most important thing to remember before and after surgery is that this is not done to cure your glaucoma. If you have lost any of your eyesight before the surgery, you will not regain it.

What to Do After Surgery

First of all, the surgeon will examine your eye the next day to make sure that there is no pressure building up in your eye, and if it gives an excellent early reading and that there are no signs of things like infection, they will put a pad over it to protect your eye.

Ensure you observe good hygiene, especially around your face and eyes. That will keep bacteria away from the site. If you are going to put eye drops in your eye that was operated on, ensure you wash your hands thoroughly before doing that. You might have to put these eyedrops, whether antibiotics or anti-inflammatory, in for months, so pay attention to what you do each time. You might feel some pain, too. You can control that by taking Tylenol or other NSAIDs.

What to Look Out for

If you experience vision loss, discharge, or redness, you should seek medical attention immediately to keep things from worsening. That will keep you from experiencing any significant setbacks in your recovery.

After around two months, you can get glasses and keep protecting your eye, especially if you are playing sports or in a windy situation. If you are on medication, follow your doctor's instructions.

You need to be as careful as you can after your surgery. If you are attentive, things should go smoothly, and you can enjoy your life again.
